King George County

"Gateway to the Historic Northern Neck"

King George County is located on the Northern Neck peninsula and is bounded on the north by the beautiful Potomac River and the historic Rappahannock River by the south. It is approximately 83 miles southeast of Washington D.C. and 60 miles north of the state capital of Richmond. According to the U.S. Census Bureau in the 2010 census there were 23,584 people. The county covers approximately 183 square miles and includes 131 miles of shoreline on the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers.

King George is considered to be in the Fredericksburg Region, and like Fredericksburg is abundant in American History. Dating back to 1608, Captain John Smith explored the Northern Neck area including the area known today as King George County. After the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth and his accomplice made their escape route to King George County in April 1865. James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, was born in Port Conway in southern King George county at Belle Grove plantation.

King George County currently has one high school, one middle school, three elementary schools, one Special Education Center and Head Start site.

It has a growing state of the art fiber optics and telecommunications network and serves as home of one of the world's premier research and development centers, the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, one of the region's largest employers.
